“Where are you watching the royal wedding?” my friend asked, and was horrified with my reply of, “I’m not – I’ll see the highlights on the news later, I don’t need to see the whole thing”
She was really inviting me to her home, to watch it with some other friends, so we could relax in front of the TV, toast the happy couple and enjoy some food and chat together. “It’s tradition and a part of our history – everyone will be watching”. Although I had heard that only 50% of the population were interested in the wedding (the other 50% being men) and I wasn’t really sure if I shared her privileged view of being a spectator to this lavish event, I was happy to be part of the girly champagne get together and was easily persuaded to join the party and really enjoyed our time together.
I’ll spare any wedding highlights or Monarchy comments here, suffice to say that as I reflected on a historic day it made me think just think about the days when most people are off work for a specific occasion – and although they are few and far between it gives us a good opportunity to spend it with friends.
and….that’s what friends are for! I returned home grateful for the invitation after a fun day.
