What a different world we live in when the sun comes out!
After enjoying a lazy rainy day on the Saturday before Easter, reading a book and generally pottering about in the house, I went out for a walk with a friend and her new bike for some fresh air in the warmth of the Easter Monday sunshine.
Now I haven’t been on a bike for many years however I know that you never forget these skills….or so they say. I watched her ride along the road, enjoying the experience and was eagerly awaiting a shot – after we reached the safety of the old railway line.
I was flabbergasted when I found it really difficult to keep the bike upright and still long enough to park my backside on the saddle and my feet on the pedals while transitioning from a standing start to moving off. After several attempts and much laughter, I hadn’t moved at all so she kindly held the bike steady for me so I could get organised and then gave me a gentle push……a good friend indeed.
I was off. I felt great with the wind in my hair as I pedalled along the stretch of the old track and my mind began reminiscing of the times as a youngster I had felt just like this for many hours on the country roads outsideEdinburgh.
But what if she hadn’t helped me start, given me that wee push or I hadn’t had the courage to persevere? What if I had been by myself? Would I ever have got going? Probably yes, however the effort would have taken much longer and I think much of the time I would have been pushing the bike rather than riding it. Instead of getting me around faster, it would probably have slowed me down!
This got me thinking about my business life.
Successful businesses are co-ordinated and balanced and have their Marketing, Operations and Finance running in the right direction. Now as we progress it’s all right to have a wobble here and there and maybe reach for the stabilisers again at different progression times, as long as we keep moving forward.
Practise is what makes us better at what we chose to do in our lives and I recently enjoyed these words, “You’re whole life gets better you’re your business gets better”
Our lives get better when we realise what we are good at and learn to ask for a gentle push when we get stuck in other areas – just like when learning to ride a bike!!
That’s What Friends Are For
