Sometimes there is no need for a debate, for me anyway the answer is obvious and although in this case it is to me, I am keen to hear your experiences and preferences too.
Dilema
I decided on Saturday that I needed a new pair of Jeans and immediately thought, it’s Saturday, the busiest shopping day of the week and there are so many shops and shopping centres in and around Edinburgh to chose from.
For those that know me, I’m really not good at shopping, seriously I am not.
Tradition
When I was young, everything was bought from the co-op – it spread across of Bread Street in town and of Hamilton Place in Stockbridge. They had a loyalty scheme and that made us very loyal Co-op. We would take a short walk to Stockbridge for food, pharmacy and photograph processing or a longer walk to Bread Street for clothes, shoes and haberdashery. Bread Street was more of a trip out, and for some reason we had to be more smartly dressed when a trip into town was called for, almost like we had to prove we had nice clothes when shopping for new ones…….
Exception
And for a special treat and to see the animals in the mini zoo, we had an occasional trip to Goldberg’s at Tollcross, but I never remember leaving there with anything, the money was always kept for the Co-op.
Overwhelm
Today we have outlet malls, shopping centres and retail parks spread about Edinburgh and surrounding areas and when I considered the options and possibilities before I left the house I felt quite overwhelmed. So I made a decision to return to my childhood thinking,
“Which is the best shop for me to go shopping in”
Decision
Fantastic, before I left the house, I knew where I was going. I went straight to the shop, made my decision (from many pairs of Jeans) and left, Jeans in hand and was back in the car within 10 minutes of arriving at the shop.
Now I just have this picture of some of my friends, “We could have made a day out of that” and all sorts of other comments. And choice can be a wonderful thing, but when I want something practical, I make many decisions before I leave home, how about you?
Questions
How do you make decisions when placed with so much choice?
How do you select your criteria cost/time/quality?
How many pairs of Jeans/Photocopiers/phones do you really need to see?
Can taking decisions on specific requirements make our final choice easier?
And Finally
And in closing, I know that we all do things in different ways, and if you enjoy a Saturday afternoon meandering round stores, then please enjoy it – I’d rather get the shopping done and get home to read a book!!
And I know that if I were going to get a new book, that would be quite a different story!
Is There Just Too Much Choice Today?
Yes, there is!
