Although we live in a fabulously technological world, every so often it just doesn’t work!
So when my telephone wasn’t working, I made a call to my supplier in the hope that they would fix it for me. “We’ll log a call with the engineer” they said.
The following morning, unannounced, an engineer arrived at my front door and after some investigation said that I had a major fault. He had located the fault was outside my house and would be back on Monday morning as he could not get access to the line running through a nearby garden.
Great, reported and someone was in control. I had no need for concern.
Then it got interesting.
About half an hour after the engineer left I received a phonecall. This phonecall was from the provider to set up an appointment for an engineer to call. He gave me a list of options and asked which one suited me best.
I explained the engineer has been and was returning on Monday – but there was no need for me to be in as he has established the fault was outside the house.
“But I need to make an appointment, if he’s coming back on Monday, I’ll make it for Monday” Now I became confused and imagined a second engineer arriving for the appointment.
“I have to make an appointment to move this job on!”
Now in life we always have a choice. I could get quite angry about having a future conversation about something that happened in the past. this guy clearly was not listening but focussed on getting his job ‘moved on’ and the only way he knew how to do that was make an appointment! I asked if he could add a note to say a visit had taken place. No response.
I decided that I was enjoying my Saturday and was not going to be upset by this poor guy who was only doing his job with a limited system so agreed on Monday and smiled as I put down the phone. It wasn’t worth the energy of getting upset!!
Technology, great when it works, if only the people who had to press the buttons were as well programmed!!
Did He Really Say That?
