Many people believe that the New Year is the best time to make resolutions.
However, here at miworld, we do things differently and we find that rounding off the year in mid December with a deep review for the preceding 50 weeks works much better. Working on our plans and vision for 2017 before the festive season kicks off means we get to really relax and enjoy the festivities and doing so gets us off to a flying start in January.
And as I look back over 2016, I see, appreciate and give thanks for all the learning, fun and challenges I experienced both in and outside of my business.
Nothing in nature stands still, there’s a cycle of growth, renewal, harvest and dying away. We have to be aware of where we are in our cycles and in order to make progress, we need to keep growing in all aspects of our lives.
It helps define our progress by checking in with our intentions from last year:
I wanted to holiday more, with at least one trip to Spain. And I did, my trips included:
Asturias in the north of Spain, and I started to learn to speak Spanish!
A weekend to my mother’s hometown of Macduff to reminisce and enjoy the glorious sunset.
A business adventure to Windsor in June, because I’m happy travelling whether for business or pleasure.
A night in St Andrews with friends in October.
Reflection: I have been away from home several times, and want to do more next year. And I realised this isn’t just about my holiday adventures, its more about balancing my business time with pleasure time and being able to take time for me, regardless of what I do with it.
I wanted to launch a group where we could work together to grow our businesses, offering more flexibility around my consultancy.
VisionWorks was launched early in the year and enables directors who want to grow their businesses in a challenging and supportive environment work together to do just that.
Reflection: I love VisionWorks. It’s an amazing programme and a joint effort between me and my clients that shows instant results and I want to do more of it with more people.
I wanted to take more care of me so that I would be more able to support, encourage and challenge my clients to transition their lives so they can grow their business. For me to get you caring about you, I need to take care of me.
I joined a gym, aiming to swim at least 40 lengths every second day .
Reflection: I’m not managing to hit my target, some weeks I attend only once, and other times its two or three a week, so I’m doing a lot more than I did before. And I’m walking, sometimes along the beautiful Portobello beach; feeding the ducks as I walk round the pond in the Figgate park and occasionally enjoying the phenomenal Edinburgh scenery from the top of Arthur Seat.
So looking back, might I have done better? Of course, however I feel I’m progressing nicely along the directions I had set for myself and I’m ready to sit down in December, not January, and decide on my intentions for next year. Which means that this time next year; I will have set clear intentions for 2017 and it will be easy for me to measure how I have done.
How do you measure your growth and progress and when do you do so?
If you find its easier working in a group and want to make 2018 your big year, my December VisionWorks session is on 20th December in central Edinburgh and you’re most welcome to join us. We’d love to have you there.
We’ll be one (or maybe three) steps ahead, ready to take on 2018 with confidence, energy and focus. Make 2018 your best year yet.
