I remember with excitement the day I started up my business.
No boss, no staff, no stress….. and looking back now I realise, not much of an clue!
The Big idea was that I would get paid for my passion; this was totally what I wanted to do. Motivated to support people who wanted to build better businesses, I would be working with them as they did it, improving the quality of service to their clients, improving their staff performance and their own quality of life.
Armed with passion, a little bit of confidence, and what seemed like blood, sweat and many tears behind me, I passionately believed I could make a difference to the lives of those people who had courageously chosen to serve the community with their talents.
Nothing prepared me for the emotional journey I was about to embark on and after a couple of years something big struck me, helped by two truly inspiring books.
The first one is, The Cashflow Quadrant, by Robert Kiyosaki. He writes about the difference between having a job and running a business.
He talks about an accountant who starts up in business and spends his days doing accounts and of course, finding clients. According to Kiyosaki, this man doesn’t have a business, he has a job. He may not have a boss but sadly he doesn’t have a business unless he turns up for work every day!
Kiyosaki describes a business as a self contained entity that works, regardless of who is working it. Look at McDonald’s as a business not a restaurant. Regardless of where you are in the world, you’ll see the same sign; get the same service and most of the same menu. This is because McDonald’s has a great business model, a system that can be run by (almost) anyone.
To make your business grow successfully, you must start with the intention – your vision of what you want it to look like in the future, what you want it to achieve and understand why that makes you feel happy and fulfilled.
Because it’s not just business that needs intention and attention, your life does too!
With your intention clear, you’ll have the focus to give it the discipline and attention it needs daily, making it easier to do the tasks necessary to build your future company, train and coach your staff and build the life that you are seeking, one day and one step at a time.
