I used to watch in awe as Jodie, my son’s hamster, jumped onto her wheel and ran and ran and ran, putting her heart and soul into going no-where. There were times when we had to oil her wheel so she could work out in silence and we could get some sleep.
Animal instinct amazes me and often amuses me too, think about it; every caged hamster in captivity knows just how to run on a wheel for hours.
These days I don’t find it quite so amusing, because I see it all around me. It’s not only the plight of the hamster, sadly many of us humans spend too long working hard to get nowhere!
Having lost the exciting vision we initially set out in pursuit of, we keep searching to regain our direction and the energy with which we began our quest. Instead, at the end of the day, we can be left feeling unfulfilled with just enough energy to switch on the television and fall asleep in front of it.
Of course we’re not all like that, all of the time. But there are many of us like that enough of the time. Uncomfortable with where we are but not uncomfortable enough to make a change.
Are you there? And if you are, what are your choices?
Many of us are often uncomfortably comfortable. You don’t like where you are but it’s not bad enough to make you do something different, – yet! You know life could be so much better but it feels like it would take too much effort to change it.
Someone once told me she hated her job, “What are you doing to change it?” I asked. With a horrified look on her face she responded, “Nothing! The thought of an interview horrifies me.”
She chose to stay in a job she hated, rather than go through the recruitment process to get a new one. Her choice was to stay in discomfort because the thought of attending an interview was painful to her. Better the devil you know?
In business it can be like that too, we’re uncomfortable, but just not uncomfortable enough to do something about it. We wait for things to get worse, so we can hit rock bottom and get then get trigger to change!
So, no, it’s not better the devil you know.
Human beings resist change but sometimes you have to step up and embrace it. Don’t be like the people that aren’t unhappy enough. Get off that track and onto one that is going where you want it to go.
Make the necessary changes so that you’re going forward on your journey, not running to stay in the same place. Make sure you wake up with a passion to make good things happen and reach the destination you have been dreaming about, wherever it is.
Get off your hamster wheel so you can breathe, plan your future, and get stuck in.
