I was chatting away the other day to a young guy who said, “I hate it when people say I need a plan, I don’t”
With a sharp intake of breath, I had to restrain myself from unleashing the flurry of thoughts that galloped into my head and stop them from tumbling straight out of my mouth with no filter.
Thoughts like:
Why on earth would he not want to take time to work on what he wanted from life? Does he even know why a plan is so important to have for work/life/everything?
Without his own plan, poor guy will probably end up right in the middle of someone else’s.
How can he think of venturing through life, only to look back in later life and regret what he might have done?
Who has he been listening to? Should I, could I will I, must I rescue him and must I do it right now?
Because I’m all about the plan; big picture, details and all the in betweens, I have my own life plans and my work is all about helping other people make plans. How could this young man possibly be okay without a plan?
‘OK, he’s young,’ I thought, and I didn’t really have a plan when I was young; like most of us, I had a job!
However, I just couldn’t let him go without checking it out further; I felt a weird sense of responsibility to make sure this guy would, at some point, have some sort of a plan.
“So you don’t want a plan, tell me what you are thinking about doing?” I asked him.
“I have handed in my notice and I am going to travel in the world for three months, work where I can, learn from the people I meet, the places I see and let my gut tell me where to go next and when to leave. Then when I come home, I’ll work out what I want to do with my life!”
My heart warmed, I relaxed and I smiled, he’s got it sussed! He had a plan, he just didn’t know it. Whew!
A plan, a direction, a time out, call it what you will, we all need it.
…and breathe, all is well!
…I know you have a plan, don’t you? And if not, we offer masterclasses and one on one personal consulting. Planning for 2018 starts early at miworld, so why not get moving now and give us a call?
